Recent Returns
The Lost Island of Tamarind by Nadia Aguiar - this adventurous novel tracks the adventures of Maya, a 13 year old victim of an accident at sea. She ends up on the mysterious island of Tamarind, with her baby sister and younger brother, searching for her lost parents; she discovers a wonderful, terrifying, magical place and learns a great deal about herself in the process. A new book it has only checked out twice, but then again, we've only had it two months!
Storyteller by Edward Myers - another new book with just two checkouts, this one follows teenage Jack, as he tries to help the king, meets a talking bird and a one-eyed robber, and explores the power of story to reveal good and evil.
The Originals by Dave Gibbons - a very stylish black and white graphic novel, follows the adventures of Lel, and his friend Bok as they join the Originals and fight the Dirt, ride Hovers, and try to make sense out of growing up. 8 circs on this one...

Should we start a Teen Book Discussion Group?
I'm contemplating whether or not people would enjoy getting together to discuss the great (and not so great) books they've read recently.
We could get together weekly, every few weeks (maybe every 3 weeks, because that's how often books are due!), or once a month. We could meet on a Saturday afternoon, or on a Friday afternoon (probably about 2:00 on a Saturday, or 4:00 on a Friday) for about an hour or hour and a half.
There would, naturally, be snacks.
We could either choose to discuss a specific BOOK each time (so we'd choose a book one session, then everyone read it before the next session, and discuss that one book) or we could choose a THEME (such as grief, love, loss, adventure) and each person could discuss that theme in reference to whatever book(s) they had read lately.
Please, take my poll, and/or answer here and tell me what you think. If you don't want to answer here, please come by the library and talk to me or one of the other staff in person!

UpComing Events
This March we will have our usual Spring Break activities going on, but on a slightly different schedule than normal...
On Friday, March 13, we will show a movie. The title of the movie is still a big secret, but it will relate to the "One Book, One Waco" book for the Spring, which will be announced in a few days. Free popcorn will be served, and all families are welcome to attend
On Saturday, March 14, we will have an afternoon of gaming fun, with all the usual suspects, including the Gamecube (Mario Kart, Naruto, SSB), Wii (SSB Brawl, Wii sports, etc...) and Playstation with DDR. Free Snack; open to all tweens and teens 11-17.
We've also started planning for the summer - the Teen Reading Club theme this year will be "Time Twistin'" and we intend to focus on Time Travel and Outer Space. But we're having trouble choosing what sorts of events we'd like to try to offer. Would you prefer

Fruits Basket Ultimate Edition - these 3 volumes came upstairs just a couple of weeks ago, and have stayed checked out almost continuously ever since. They each have 4 circs!

Book Review
Breathe: a Ghost Story by Chris McNish
I started reading this day before yesterday - I am absolutely fascinated! This is a great book. Jack is a young man who can "see" the memories left behind by dead people... and now, when he and his mother move into a new house, he also discovers that he can see ghosts. The Mother Ghost begs him to be "her son", but the four younger ghosts are terrified of her... what will she do if Jack agrees?
Jack is an interesting person, and his abilities are believable, if fantastic. His curiosity, his fear and his courage are all very real. The story is just a bit scary, without being over-the-top horrific. If you like "real ghost" stories, this is an excellent one... just don't read it too late at night!

Recent Returns and Summer Plans
We're already making plans for spring and summer activities; we'll be having space-related programs all spring long, while the fabulous "Visions of the Universe" exhibit is here. We plan to have a volunteen party in mid-May as well, so if you plan to volunteer with us this summer, watch for that event...

Grim Tuesday; vol 2 of the Keys to the Kingdom by Garth Nix. One of my all-time favorite fantasy authors, this is one of his best series. She struggles to discover why her people exist, and what her future holds. A romantic and beautiful adventure of self-discovery. 23 circs. I need to find more of this series.
Madara, vol 1; By Eiji Otsuka. Madara grew up in a peaceful village, using his mechanical limbs as the blacksmith's apprentice. But when demons attack, he awakens the power to control his appendages as weapons. What does this mean? And what will happen as he sets out to explore the world? 35 circs. I will try to find the other 4 volumes, if they're still in print...

I was browsing and straightening today, and saw these returns on the cart;
Gadget (vol 1); Graphic novel by Hiroyuki Eto. Shuichi loves gadgets and tech. He especially wants the gift that lovely Manami recieved from a group of admiring aliens... too bad no more volumes appear to have been published! 36 circs.
Inkspell by Cornelia Funke. The audio sequel to Inkheart. Performed by Brendan Fraser! A beautiful fantasy story - follow Maggie, Dustfinger and Farid as they are caught back up in the magical world of Inkheart. 25 circs.
Life as we knew it by Susan Beth Pfeffer. Companion to the dead and the gone. Miranda and her family struggle to survive in a drastically changed world after an asteroid hits the moon. 3 copies have circulated 36 times. We also own the audio.
Wonder Woman: Eyes of the Gorgon by Greg Rucka. Graphic novel. As Wonder Woman tries to avert war in the White House, Medusa comes calling. 8 circs

Well, it is a new year, and I hope you are all ready to take on new challenges!
My goal for this year is to begin keeping a list of all the books I read. Ha! I'll try to keep up with that list here for all of you to enjoy...
Right now I'm in the midst of 2 graphic novels; Serenity; those left behind by Joss Whedon, and Batman Chronicles, volume 1. Serenity is based on the shortlived TV series Firefly, which I adored. The GN is not quite grabbing me, but we'll see when I get more than 5 minutes to read it!
Batman Chronicles starts at the very beginning of the comics as they were published in the 1930's. Right now it's very funny (unintentionally so) because the stories are so simplistic and the illustrations are quite amateurish. It's hysterical seeing Bruce Wayne in a mustard yellow plaid leisure suit! High fashion of the day!!!
