The New Policeman by Kate Thompson
I have to admit, I have not quite finished this novel, so my review is that of a reader still caught up in the story, wondering what will happen next. Set in Ireland, the story follows J.J. a young man with musical talent, and Larry O'Dwyer, a policeman in J.J's town. Time is slipping away from everyone; no one can understand why, but J.J. decides that, as his mother's birthday draws near, he is going to find a way to give her a gift of free time. And Larry the policeman, who can barely remember his own name, is certain he's searching for something, but not sure what it is, or what he's supposed to do if he finds it. The story moves slowly, building layer by layer in intensity and flavor. All the characters are believable people, with interesting motives and personalities. It will be fun to see if J.J. can restore time, or if things will get worse...
