Runaway Twin by Peg Kehret - narrated by young teen Sunny Farland, she tells us how and why she ran away from her latest foster home, with Rita the healthfood junkie. When Sunny was three, her mother and grandmother were killed in a car accident. She and her twin sister Star were separated, and all she has to remember her by is a single photograph. When Sunny gets a windfall of cash, she decides to run away, following the photographic clue, hoping to reunite with her sister and create a happy family for herself. All, of course, does not go well. Facing everything from unhelpful bus drivers to bullying boys and a tornado, Sunny does her best to remain hopeful. And she does make one loyal friend along the way!
The story is short, sweet, and fairly simple, but Sunny is likeable, and believable. Her trials are never very threatening, but she overcomes them with intelligence and determination. The eventual resolution is a hopeful one, but not unbelievable. Sunny grows up a good bit during her journey, and the reader will root for her all the time. so if you're looking for a quick, fun read, give this story by a long-time favorite author a try.
