the Diamond of Drury Lane by Julia Golding

I just finished this book yesterday. It was a really wonderful story! It has a very Victorian, indeed Dickensian feel to it. Cat, an orphan raised by the owner and staff of the Drury Lane Theatre in London, in the year 1780, discovers that there is a valuable diamond being hidden in the theatre, and she vows to protect it from any who would steal it. Soon, she makes two new friends, Johnny the stage prompt and artist, and Pedro, the African violinist. And shortly thereafter, her worst enemy, Billy Boil, discovers that the diamond exists... adventures, madcap and dangerous, ensue. Falling balloons, boxing matches, missing heirs, true love and other classic adventure elements all enter into this tale...

I strongly recommend it, and look for the sequel "Cat among the Pigeons", appearing in a library near you soon...
