New Books!

The Red Pyramid

Rick Riordan of "Percy Jackson" fame has a new book series coming out. The first book of the Kane Chronicles, The Red Pyramid is an exciting action adventure. I read it while I was on vacation last week. The story follows brother and sister Carter and Sadie Kane, as they struggle to understand their family legacy. After their father seemingly kills himself in an explosion at the British Museum, they are forced to flee to New York City with their mysterious Uncle Amos. Once there, they discover that they are heirs to great power, if they can survive a confrontation with an evil Egyptian God.

This saga does for the Egyptian Mythology what the Percy Jackson series did for the Greek Mythology - brings it to life! The story is action packed and energetic, the characters a likeable and believable, and you will find yourself rooting for their success at once. Don't miss what is sure to be the next blockbuster favorite series by YA author Rick Riordan.

Book Review

Runaway Twin by Peg Kehret - narrated by young teen Sunny Farland, she tells us how and why she ran away from her latest foster home, with Rita the healthfood junkie. When Sunny was three, her mother and grandmother were killed in a car accident. She and her twin sister Star were separated, and all she has to remember her by is a single photograph. When Sunny gets a windfall of cash, she decides to run away, following the photographic clue, hoping to reunite with her sister and create a happy family for herself. All, of course, does not go well. Facing everything from unhelpful bus drivers to bullying boys and a tornado, Sunny does her best to remain hopeful. And she does make one loyal friend along the way!

The story is short, sweet, and fairly simple, but Sunny is likeable, and believable. Her trials are never very threatening, but she overcomes them with intelligence and determination. The eventual resolution is a hopeful one, but not unbelievable. Sunny grows up a good bit during her journey, and the reader will root for her all the time. so if you're looking for a quick, fun read, give this story by a long-time favorite author a try.
