What I'm Reading

Dark Mirror by M. J. Putney - one of my favorite authors! She's written her first "YA" novel, and wow is it good! Set in 1803 in England (or, almost-England, as magic is real here), young Lady Victoria knows that having magic is absolutely frowned upon by the nobility. So when she wakes one night to the realization that she can fly, she's horrified. She tries to keep her secret, but when disaster strikes, she chooses to reveal her power to save a life. She's then banished to a special school where she'll learn to control her magic - or else! But will Tory and her fellow schoolmates choose to lose their powers? Or will they find another way?

This is a great story, filled with intelligent, believeable characters. In some ways, I even liked Cynthia, Tory's room-mate, more than I did Tory herself, who seems a little too good to be true once in a while... And the adventure that Tory finds herself in the midst of was fabulous. I hope that the sequel (out this fall) is just as good!

And some recent returns:
The Hunter's Moon by O. R. Melling - Gwen loves all things faerie, but when she goes to spend a summer backpacking with her cousin in Ireland, she doesn't expect anything beyond the ordinary - late nights, interesting strangers, and no parents. She doesn't expect to do battle with the King of Faeries himself! 2 copies, 41 checkouts

Alphabet of Dreams by Susan Fletcher - Mitra, a princess of Persia, and her small brother Babak, live as beggars on the streets of Rhagae. But Mitra dreams that someday they will recover their lost place in the world; when Babak begins to dream strange foretelling dreams, she hopes they can use his power to return to their family. But a powerful Magus learns of his power, and soon they find themselves on the road traveling towards a town called Bethlehem... 2 copies, 13 checkouts.

Love and Other Four Letter Words by Carolyn Mackler - Sammie's life seemed pretty good until the day her mom and dad told her they're separating for a year; she and her mother end up moving to New York and Sammie is forced to re-evaluate her life, her friendships, and everything she thought she understood about love. 59 checkouts on ONE copy!

Gotham City Sirens (vols 1: Union and 2: Songs of the Sirens) - Tales of Catwoman, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn. Follow the adventures of these three Gotham City girls as they battle evil in their own defense. Brand new books - have checked out twice, each.
